As the cold weather continues its tight hold on many parts of the country (and just about everywhere StructureMedic services), people are growing increasingly concerned not only with the health of their bodies and loved ones but that of the pipes in their home. Cold and freezing weather is notoriously hard on pipes. Fortunately, much of the damage that frequently occurs with changing weather can be easily avoided with the proper precautions.

You’ve probably heard the sage advice to let your faucets drip when freezing temperatures are predicted, but why is this so important? Quite simply, when water freezes, it expands, taking up more space in the pipe (this is true regardless of whether you have PVC, iron or lead plumbing). When you let your faucets drip, it gives that extra pressure somewhere to escape to, thereby significantly decreasing the odds that it will build up to the point of rupturing a pipe. Another, more time-consuming but equally wise precaution is to fit your pipes with insulation. Found at any local hardware store, this extra protective coating will keep your pipes as temperature controlled as possible, which can be a vital precaution against their reaching an unstable level of frozen water pressure.

Sometimes, regardless of the measures you take to keep your pipes intact and healthy, ruptures will happen. When a pipe freezes, ruptures or cracks and then unfreezes, leaks occur. What many homeowners don’t know is that actual damage to plumbing structures, unlike the water damage itself, is not always covered by homeowners insurance. No matter what degree of damage you are dealing with, you will undoubtedly want to enlist the assistance of experienced home restoration experts. StructureMedic, with their on-staff licensed plumber, will work with you and your insurance provider (Allstate, Nationwide, etc.) to repair your pipes and make you and your home are as fortified against future damage as possible.
